Worked over the weekend to finish up this project from the New Year’s Eve celebration at the Casbah in Durham. This is from the Countdown Quintet’s set when they called Peter Lamb up to play a rousing version on “Hole in my Bucket” that featured the three sax’s on stage taking a break! Sweeet!

New San Francisco Streetcar Digital Paintings
Posted by Administrator | Filed under Uncategorized
I have sold a lot of paintings of New Orleans streetcars and San Francisco cablecars and I really love the energy of these images. I just finished two new San Francisco streetcar images of the historic cars that run along the Embarcadero.
The first two are using my traditional approach to the painting, but the second two are using some new brushes that create a different look. Please leave comments below on your reactions to these!

The Art of Cool Project
Posted by Administrator | Filed under Art of Cool
Al Strong and the labourlove gallery are collaborating on a new non-profit venture called the Art of Cool Project. The Art of Cool is a jazz advocacy project showcasing high quality jazz artists in an intimate concert setting at a posh art gallery. As a member of the collective at labourlove I was introduced to Al at the first show at labourlove. That show was the impetus for the creation of the Art of Cool. As a lifelong musician and artist this project really resonates with me. I was honored when Al asked permission to use a digital painting I did of that first show at labourlove for the branding of the Art of Cool project.
As I have been thinking about it, I still wanted to do more. I have decided to offer a set of 10 images that will be available for purchase exclusively at labourlove and the profits from which will be donated to The Art of Cool Project. These images are B&W photographs of musicians, most of whom make all or a portion of their income from busking. The images are set in New Orleans, San Francisco and the Triangle. Other than Mario Abney, who has achieved a level of fame via his appearances in the HBO series Treme, none of these musicians are well-known but their love for making music drives them to continue playing for tips on the streets to make a living.
The prints are archival, hand crafted B&W images. The 5×7 images are mounted on a mat ready to go into an 8×10 frame. For each $39 print purchased, $10 will be donated to the Art of Cool project. You can buy the entire set of 10 to create an compelling gallery in your home for $350 and would generate a $100 donation.
Here are previews of a few of the images that are in this exclusive offer. Head over to labourlove gallery to check out the rest of the set.
San Francisco Emulsion Manipulation Paintings :: New Hybrid Photos

These are from a recent trip to San Francisco. I love the iconic look of telegraph hill and coit tower. I think this first image would be very cool in a large size 20″ by 30″ or larger. I think I am going to get one of these to hang with my other stuff at labourlove in Durham.
This is a closer, vertical view of telegraph hill. I would like this one in a smaller size, I think.
I also had fun iwth the streetcars and cablecars in San Francisco. This is an image of another iconic symbol of San Francisco – the powell street cablecar.
New Emulsion Manipulation Paintings :: New Orleans Revisited

I have been catching up with the New Orleans HBO series “Treme” lately. And it made me start thinking about some of my New Orleans images from the last two years. One of the New Orleans musicians that appears in the series is Mario Abney. I took a series of images of him busking in the Quarter and did a digital emulsion painting of him a couple of years ago. But I think those images were just too realistic for my taste and I have been wanting to revisit one of those images and finally a couple of weeks ago I did. I really like these much better!
This image was shot by Elizabeth during a shooting workshop at the PartnerCon conference in New Orleans. I start playing around with it a few days ago and really like the results. I hope our models/photographers Peter and Whitney don’t mind!
This last one I did a couple of months ago from a wedding second line I shot with about 6 photographer friends our lastnight in New Orleans this year. Thanks Chris Williams for letting us playing along!
San Francisco B&W images

Here are a few black and white images from my trip to San Francisco. I loved walking around and chasing fireflies. Chasing fireflies is a term one of my art photography friends, Will Jacks coined for wandering around with a camera and seeing what strikes you to shoot. My early mornings and evenings were spend wandering around telegraph hill and The Embarcadero. I am working on some new paintings based on the images I shot during the week, but felt like these black and white images really fit the old world vibe of San Francisco.

Another tourist favorite, the cable cars on Powell St.
